Volvo's New V40 Isn't Coming To The U.S.
Just last week we told you about Volvo’s all new V40, a C30-based five-door headed for next March’s Geneva Motor Show. Designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi A3 and the European BMW 1-Series hatchback, the new Volvo V40 looked to have promise as a stylish small wagon or large hatchback, depending upon your perspective.

Just last week we told you about Volvo’s all new V40, a C30-based five-door headed for next March’s Geneva Motor Show. Designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi A3 and the European BMW 1-Series hatchback, the new Volvo V40 looked to have promise as a stylish small wagon or large hatchback, depending upon your perspective.
One problem, though: as Motor Trend reports, the Volvo V40 teased isn’t meant for the U.S. market. Americans, it seems, don’t buy hatchbacks and wagons; instead we prefer crossovers, or so Volvo Cars North America (VCNA) believes.
VCNA is basing it’s decision on poor sales of the current V50 wagon, which is both past its prime and a completely different animal than the teased V40. Instead, we’re likely to get the rumored XC40 crossover that Volvo has been seen testing, if we get anything at all.
If the XC40 is built, expect it to slot into Volvo’s lineup below the XC60, which means it will be targeted against other premium compact crossovers like the upcoming BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
Volvo is neither confirming nor denying rumors of an XC40 crossover and even a new S40 sedan, so stay tuned for further details.
